When he was at table with them, he took the bread. He blessed the bread, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him!(Luke 24:13-35)

Absolute or Conditional?

Prayer for the Day

“Father, I want to dwell in your shelter today. Refresh me, and help me to walk through my day in peace. Help me to stay focused on the business you have for me.”

Reflection

Faith is a gift, which can grow if we are open to that process and at times the gift will be tested. Our faith can diminish if we do not protect it, if we become lax. We can cherish the gift, and protect it by becoming informed and by frequently thanking God.

Two contrasts we see in faith are between absolute trust, and by setting up conditions under which one will believe.

In the Old Testament, which describes the dream of Jacob, he made a vow to God "that if God protected him, provided him with food and clothing and brought him safely back to his father, then he would accept and believe in God." (Genesis 28:10-22a)

The Gospel, by contrast, depicts the Roman official knowing that Christ can bring his daughter back to life, and the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years knowing that Christ could heal her. (Matthew 9:18-26) There is a marked difference between the two readings!

How would we describe our gift and practice of faith? Do we have absolute trust, or do we place conditions on God?
